Primera División Real Madrid 4 Espanyol 1 Full time

Real Madrid extends lead at the top following a comprehensive win

Real Madrid continued their fine form in the Primera División with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Espanyol at the Bernabéu on Sunday night. The result sees Los Blancos extend their lead at the top of the table to four points, having played one game more than second-placed Barcelona.

Madrid took the lead after just 12 minutes through Karim Benzema, who headed in from close range after good work from Vinícius Júnior down the left flank. The Frenchman doubled his tally just before the half-hour mark, finishing off a flowing move involving Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos.

Espanyol pulled a goal back just before the break through Raúl de Tomás, but Madrid restored their two-goal advantage early in the second half when Rodrygo finished off a counter-attack led by Benzema.

Benzema and Modric showcasing their class

Karim Benzema and Luka Modrić were both in fine form for Real Madrid, with the Frenchman scoring twice and the Croatian providing two assists. Benzema now has 11 goals in his last 10 games in all competitions, while Modrić has been in superb form since the start of the season.

The pair combined brilliantly for Real Madrid’s second goal, with Modrić playing a perfectly weighted pass into Benzema’s path. The Frenchman took a touch to control the ball before firing into the bottom corner.

Modrić was also involved in Real Madrid’s third goal, with his pass to Rodrygo setting up the Brazilian to finish into an empty net. It was a clinical finish from Rodrygo, who has now scored three goals in his last four games.

Real Madrid looking strong as the season progresses

Real Madrid’s victory over Espanyol was their fifth in a row in all competitions, and they are now unbeaten in their last 10 games. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are looking increasingly strong, and they will be confident of challenging for the title this season.

Real Madrid’s next game is a trip to FC Barcelona in the Copa del Rey on Thursday night. It will be a tough test for Ancelotti’s side, but they will be confident of getting a result.
